This resort is a combination of both old and new. Once part of the original Sandals family, it changed hands and became Jewel Dunn’s River. Sandals founder, Butch Stewart, had a vision for the property and it once again became part of the Sandals brand. Unfortunately, Butch did not get to see this vision come to life, but Adam made the dream a reality and Sandals Dunn’s River is definitely the vision of the future.
Back in 1997, my husband and I spent our honeymoon in Jamaica. We briefly stopped at the old Sandals Dunn’s River when we were on an excursion from Sandals Royal Jamaican (which everyone now knows as Sandals Royal Caribbean) to the famous Dunn’s River Falls. It was a lovely and quaint resort, and we couldn’t wait to go back to see the changes.
All I can say is I was completely WOWed by this new and improved resort, and I absolutely cannot wait to go back.
Sandals Dunn’s River Frequently Asked Questions
Before I get into the heart of this review and sharing how much I love it, here are a few answers to the most frequently asked questions about Sandals Dunn’s River.
How Far Is Sandals Dunn’s River From the Airport?
Sandals Dunn’s River is located approximately 60 miles away from Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston and around 55 miles from Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay. Guests can enjoy complimentary roundtrip transfers to and from both airports when staying at the resort.
Does Sandals Dunn’s River Resort Have a Lazy River?
Technically, no, but the main pool is long and has a river style layout. The two sides are separated by a small walkway, and both feature and infinity style edge to the pool.
Is Sandals Dunn’s River a Brand New Resort?
Yes, and no! Sandals Dunn’s River was part of the Sandals brand, changed hands, and has come back new and reimagined. Some things are brand new builds, and others are remodels.
Can Sandals Dunn’s River Guests Go to Sandals Royal Plantation?
No, unfortunately there is no exchange privileges with Sandals Royal Plantation. A small number of guests from Ochi and Royal Plantation can come to Sandals Dunn’s River for dinner only at this time.
Where Are the Tufa Terrace One Bedroom Skypool Butler Suite w/ Balcony Tranquility Soaking Tub Rooms Located?
The Tufa Terrace buildings where these rooms are located are completely new builds, and you can find them at the end of the resort closest to the Jerk Shack restaurant. One is situated in front of the pool with the swim up bar, and where our room was located.
The Entry for the Sandals Dunn’s River TSKY Rooms
Once you enter the room, you will find the bathroom area and your in-room bar. Let’s begin with the bar area.
Since this a butler room (and our first-time having butler service at Sandals Resorts), we were able to request what liquor and other drinks we wanted before we ever set foot on the resort. Our butlers, Shawn and Tenneil, were spot on, and had everything we requested.
Our under-the-counter fridge was also stocked per our butler form, so we were very excited about that. Sometimes when we stayed club level, we had difficulty with our in-room beverages, but staying butler definitely made that a non-issue.
Every evening, we also came back to our room to a full ice bucket, as well as all of our favorites being restocked. Absolutely lovely!
Tufa Terrace One Bedroom Skypool Butler Suite Bathroom Area
This has been, by far, one of the most luxurious Sandals bathrooms I have been in so far. The size was incredible, and we had no problems being in there at the same time. There are some things that could be improved on, but we were pleased nonetheless.
Immediately inside the bathroom area is your closet, which contains your safe, umbrellas, and some shelves for items.
Next to the closet is your toilet. Be aware that there are motion sensors in the toilet area, and it will randomly turn off on you. Not a big deal, but it was sometimes startling. The nice thing about it if you got up in the middle of the night, you didn’t have to worry about finding the light switch.
The large soaking tub in this bathroom was great. I am short, so I never really used the tubs before. This one was easy to get in and out of and had a seat on the inside. Several times I used it for bubble baths and now I am completely hooked.
There is a shelf area with a makeup mirror attached to it. We had plenty of space for all our bathroom necessities, and the mirror was lighted which made getting ready easy.
The sink itself is a trough sink, and a little awkward to use, especially when you went to fill up a cup when brushing your teeth or rinsing anything out.
The shower area was simply amazing with dual shower heads. It was large and comfortable to use, and plenty of space for your shower supplies.
There was a towel rack outside the shower where I would hang my towel and my robe, and it worked out well. And the housekeeping staff always kept the room stocked with plenty of towels and washcloths, and we never ran out.
Areas of Improvement in the Bathroom
- The closet could have been bigger with some closed drawers for clothing since there are no dressers in the main living area.
- The main sink is awkward to use for putting on makeup or doing hair. Either have a smaller sink or incorporate a dressing area. There was plenty of room for it.
- The tiles around the tub are slippery, so make sure you put a towel or bathmat down. Same goes for the shower area.
TSKY Tufa One Bedroom Skypool Butler Suite Bedroom Area
As always, Sandals always does a great job with the beds at their resorts. I never have trouble sleeping in them and always wake-up refreshed.
The large king-sized bed has two night tables with a drawer, and plenty of plugs for your electronics.
You will find a comfortable bench at the foot of the bed which we used to store things on.
There is also a desk area on the wall, which our butlers had decorated for my birthday. I usually plugged in my power strip there so I would have a place to charge our butler phone.
The large TV on the wall swiveled out and turned, so if you wanted to watch TV in bed, it was simple to do.
Lastly there was a shelf area that separated it from the living space which we usually used to enjoy our afternoon snacks from the butlers.
Areas of Improvement for the Bedroom of the TSKY Room
- There are no drawers here for storing clothing. Everything was out in the open in the closet area and while we kept the closet door closed, I still didn’t like that.
Tufa Terrace One Bedroom Skypool Butler Suite Living Room Area
There were two different layouts, depending on what room you got. When we went to Sandals Dunn’s River, it was only open for several months and there were still things on order. In the concept pictures, it shows a large couch. We ended up having a second bed area.
The only time I ever used it was to repack our suitcases. The odd number rooms had the sofas. I don’t know if that is still the case, but if you want the sofa, then request an odd number room.
There was also a nice feature wall in the living area.
Areas of Improvement for the Living Area
- No dining table in the room with chairs. If you enjoy breakfast or dinner in your room, there was no comfortable place to sit and eat.
- They should have put comfy chairs instead of a second bed.
The Awesome Skypool at Sandals Dunn’s River
Let’s talk about the best part of this room: the skypool. As I mentioned earlier, this is the first time my husband and I had butler service or splurged on a room at this level. We managed to snag it when it showed up on the 777 and we absolutely do not regret doing it.
The patio area is fairly large and consists of the tranquility soaking tub. I will say, I love sitting outside at night listening to the peepers while soaking in the tub. There was also a large, comfy chair that I curled up and read in (and may have even taken a nap) and a nice rack for hanging towels and swimsuits to dry on.
And, of course, the skypool! I was absolutely amazed at how awesome it was. I found the water temperature was perfect, and keep in mind I tend to be cold sometimes when I am swimming, and I found the temperature to be comfortable.
We were on the fourth floor of the building, and the views were amazing. We spent one afternoon in the skypool just relaxing and talking and watching other guests enjoying the watersports and the tubing. When you enjoy a drink from your bar, it really is the perfect way to relax and pamper yourself.
Areas of Improvement With the Patio Area
- A real table and chairs to enjoy meals. There is a chair, but only a coffee table type of table and it is at an awkward level for eating.
- Non-see through Skypool fronts. The front of the Skypools are clear glass and completely see-through. You can see everything your neighbors are doing. Be aware.
