With a total of 6 Dreams Resorts in the Dominican Republic, it’s easy to get confused. Each one is luxurious and all-inclusive, but they do have differences.
To help you decide which Dreams resort is best for you, read on to learn all about Dreams Onyx Punta Cana, including what previous guests have to say in their reviews.
Dreams Onyx Punta Cana Reviews: Overview
The beautiful and sprawling Dreams Onyx is one of many all-inclusive resorts in Punta Cana, a region with some of the Dominican Republic’s best beaches.
This family-friendly luxury all-inclusive (part of the World of Hyatt) is popular with both families and couples. There is an extra-large family block of suites for families of four or more, and adjoining room options are great if you’re traveling with older kids.
For couples seeking romance and luxury, Dreams Onyx delivers in spades. Enjoy a relaxing couples’ massage at the spa or in your room, and follow it up with a private gourmet dinner for two on a reserved stretch of beach.
Guests here have access to the neighboring Punta Cana adults-only all-inclusive resort, Breathless Punta Cana, for additional restaurants and facilities like a casino and a nightclub.
Dreams Onyx Punta Cana reviews on Google are mostly positive, with the majority of guests giving them 5 stars. Top ratings go to the service, food, property, activities, and family friendly facilities. Many guests also remarked on how safe the resort felt.
Dreams Onyx Punta Cana Reviews: Rooms & Suites
Of the resort’s 806 suites, 320 of them are family suites, located in a separate block in their own building of connected rooms with two beds each. Most of the balconies look down onto the pool or garden, but a few offer partial ocean views. Some Junior Suites come with swim-up entrances or private hot tubs.
Premium Junior Suites are located in the Jungle Waterpark section of the resort and come with either pool or tropical views. Some include a hot tub on the furnished terrace or balcony. The color scheme is bright (almost lime) green and white with bamboo and light wooden furnishings.
You can also find two-bedroom family suites in the Jungle Waterpark section. These come with one king-size bed and two double beds and can accommodate up to 10 guests. They consist of three connected units and have a fully furnished terrace with a private hot tub in each one, plus a separate living room space and dining area.
Preferred Club Junior Suites all come with nicer views and upgraded amenities like luxury bath products and premium minibar choices, plus furnished terraces or balconies and a private hot tub.
The adult-only Preferred Club Junior Suite includes a hot tub and a private plunge pool. The Master Suite Ocean Front Room, also for adults only, comes with a king-sized bed in a separate bedroom, a living area, a huge terrace with a hot tub and separate sitting and lounge areas, plus a second hot tub in the spacious bathroom.
The Presidential Suite has a fully equipped kitchen and dining room, a large living room and terrace, and hot tubs on the terrace and in the oversized bathroom. The Presidential Suite also connects to the Preferred Club Junior Suite with Ocean Views.
Dreams Onyx Punta Cana reviews praise the rooms’ spaciousness and cleanliness, although some guests found rooms to be damp and dated, and the AC and WiFi lacking.
Dreams Onyx Punta Cana Reviews: Food & Drinks
Dreams Onyx has one of the largest food selections of all Dreams Resorts. There are 24 restaurants and bars onsite, and guests can explore all the options available next door at Breathless Punta Cana as well.
For dinner, guests can choose from 6 a la carte options. Tamarindo serves traditional Mexican fare (and is open for lunch to Preferred Club guests), Spice is the resort’s Asian restaurant, Mercure specializes in French cuisine, and Capers serves Italian meals, while Cin Cin has a menu full of delicacies from across the Mediterranean. The Bluewater Grill is a steakhouse that also serves North American favorites like gourmet burgers.
Speaking of burgers, On A Roll Burger Bar is open for lunch, dinner, and late-night munchies. It’s located near the front of the resort in a cluster of restaurants, bars, snack shacks, shops, and the theater. If you’re spending the day by the beach you can get similar offerings at The Barefoot Grill.
For snacks and sweet treats, there’s Coconut Korner, a snack bar next to the waterpark that also serves drinks and stays open till 10:00 p.m.; Sundaez, an ice cream parlor; or Coco Cafe, a 24-hour cafe and deli. Carnival International Cafe is where to go if you can’t decide. It lays out an impressive international buffet for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
While most Dreams Onyx Punta Cana reviews say the food is excellent, some guests were disappointed. Some reviews also mention long wait times at the restaurants and recommend to go early to dinner.
There are 4 bars on the pool deck and beach, with wait staff circulating to take your order. Sand Bar is on the beach, directly behind the children’s pool and next to the towel shack. The Reef, the main pool bar, is on a little man-made “island” in the middle of the main swimming pool.
There are also two swim-up bars: Splash, in the main pool, and The Mix, which is in the waterpark and also has a dry side for parents to sit and relax while the kids play. Preferred Club guests have an exclusive bar in their reserved pool area as well.
For a before-dinner drink, choose from the lobby bar Moments, or Prelude, a cocktail bar that’s near the block of restaurants where guests can wait for their table. After a delicious gourmet dinner, head to Scores to watch the game or play a game of billiards, or catch a show at Spotlight, the resort’s theater bar.
Dreams Onyx Punta Cana Reviews: Beach
The Dominican Republic is known for having some of the nicest beaches in the Caribbean, and Dreams Onyx Punta Cana sits on a large stretch of beach with plenty of room for beach walks, lounging, and wading in the warm water. The waves are gentle enough for kids who can swim well to snorkel in. While seaweed can be a problem, the resort staff does a very good job of keeping up with it.
Some Dreams Onyx Punta Cana reviews mention that the Preferred Club private beach feels less “private” than at other Dreams resorts, but since Dreams shares the area with lots of other resort chains, that’s not a surprise. For extra seclusion, you can book a private cabana.
Dreams Onyx Punta Cana Reviews: Pools
There are 6 lovely swimming pools at Dreams Onyx Punta Cana; reviews are almost all positive for these areas as guests enjoyed having so much choice. The main pool has a large infinity edge that looks out onto the beautiful beach plus a man-made island in the center with loungers, umbrellas, and a beach bar.
Preferred Club guests have access to an adult-only pool with a swim-up bar on one end of the resort grounds, near the restaurants and just a short walk from the beach. On the opposite side of the resort, there is a second Preferred Club pool for families.
The Jungle Waterpark is located towards the back of the property, far from the beach. It features another large splash pool, a lazy river, and several tall waterslides, plus sun loungers and a snack bar that also serves alcohol. Many Dreams Onyx Punta Cana reviews mention how fun the waterpark area is.
Dreams Onyx Punta Cana Reviews: Activities
There is so much to do at Dreams Onyx Punta Cana that you might not have enough time to cover it all. Indulge at the spa, sweat it out in the gym, or explore what the resort has to offer; the choice is yours. Many of the events and activities planned by the resort are included in the rate with very few exceptions.
During the day, beach volleyball matches, instructor-led yoga classes, and dance lessons are offered to whoever is interested. If you’re itching to try scuba diving, you can take a free intro class in the pool or arrange a dive excursion (for an extra cost) with the concierge, who can also book tours, day trips, and other outings at your pleasure. There is plenty to do in and around Punta Cana if you want to check it out.
Many of the resort’s guests are families traveling with kids so there is a lot to keep them occupied while parents relax. The Explorer’s Club has a weekly schedule of planned activities for kids aged 3-12, while the Core Zone is for older kids and teenagers (age 17 is the cut-off). The waterpark is especially popular and has a restaurant, bar, and lounge area for parents.
Dreams Onyx Punta Cana reviews liked that there were so many activities and said that the energy level at the resort is very high. However, some guests noted that there wasn’t much happening in the evening.
Dreams Onyx Punta Cana Reviews: Romance Packages
Dreams Resorts have romance packages to suit any occasion from engagements to weddings to honeymoons to anniversaries. They even have elopement packages.

The Beyond Memorable, Dreams of Love, and Dreams Ultimate wedding packages include a reception, photo or video package to remember your special day, a discount at the spa, and a cocktail party or rehearsal dinner. The Elopement Package includes all of the above plus a romantic dinner for two the night of the ceremony, a complimentary hydrotherapy circuit treatment, and a 20-image digital photo album. The vow-renewal package comes with many of the same components as the elopement and wedding packages.
For a honeymoon in the Dominican Republic, the Dreams Eternity Honeymoon Package features breakfast in bed, a 25-minute couples’ massage plus another couples’ spa treatment of your choice, petit fours each night, and a romantic beachfront dinner. If you book 4 nights or more, you’ll receive an additional free night.
It’s worth noting that some Dreams Onyx Punta Cana reviews advised couples who are looking for a romantic getaway to stay at the adults-only Breathless resort next door, due to all the children at Dreams Onyx.
Dreams Onyx Punta Cana Reviews: What Is Included
Dreams’ standard all-inclusive package, The Unlimited Luxury, covers all-you-can-eat dining and unlimited drinks including international and premium selections at no additional charge. Guests also have access to 24-hour room service and an in-room minibar, which is restocked daily.
Rates are also inclusive of a wide selection of daytime activities like non-motorized watersports, use of the sports facilities like the gym, tennis court, and beach volleyball court, and some fun interactive classes like dance and Spanish classes. You’ll also get free admission to nightly entertainment such as musical theater productions, theme nights, and beach parties.
Preferred Club upgrades get you all of the above plus better accommodations; exclusive access to quieter, reserved sections of the resort grounds, a private pool, and a private section of the beach; more dining options; private bars; a premium minibar selection; and nicer room amenities.
Some reviews of Dreams Onyx mention that since tipping isn’t included, guests should be sure to bring plenty of cash for that.
Dreams Onyx Punta Cana Reviews: Location
