Sandals resorts are popular among couples because of their excellent locations, outstanding service and inclusions, and generous honeymoon and wedding packages. It comes as a surprise to many to find out that there is not a Sandals resort in Mexico. 

Will There Ever Be a Sandals Resort in Mexico?

While there are currently no Sandals resorts in Mexico, rumors of the company expanding out of the Caribbean and opening a location somewhere in the Riviera Maya region have been circulating for years. CEO Adam Stewart confirmed back in 2016 that the company had plans to break ground on a location near Playa del Carmen, and hinted at possible second locations in Cancun or Cabo San Lucas.

Even more recently CEO Gebhard Rainer said Sandals is early in the process of “exploring possibilities” with developers and local governments in Mexico and the Dominican Republic. He said “They’re two very interesting destinations, but we have to make sure a (potential resort) location is just right before taking action.” He said Sandals looks for the best beaches, but “we don’t want to position ourselves in an area that already has thousands of rooms.”

Alternatives to a Sandals Resort in Mexico

There are tons of all-inclusive resorts in Mexico for all types of travelers. If you’re interested in Sandals, chances are an adult-only all-inclusive is what you’re after. We might be a few years away from making a reservation at a Mexico Sandals resort, but in the meantime here are a few of our favorite adult-only all-inclusive resorts in Mexico. 

Secrets Akumal

Although not affiliated with Sandals Resorts, Secrets Resorts offer a similar experience. The most affordable Secrets resort in Mexico is Secrets Akumal, in the heart of Riviera Maya, near Tulum. The resort offers breathtaking views of the Caribbean and a beautifully landscaped property bursting with tropical plants.

Built right on the shoreline, the resort offers views of the turquoise Caribbean Sea that will leave you “breathless.” The buildup of sargassum seaweed, which is a common problem for all resorts in the area, can sometimes render the beach un-swimmable but there are loungers for sunbathing and relaxing, and staff offer food and beverage service. 

Previous guests of Breathless Riviera Cancun praise the property, citing excellent customer service, lively daily and nightly entertainment, and delicious food. However, other reviews mention that the beach was underwhelming, and the party atmosphere means that light sleepers might have issues with the noise. However, if you’re ready to party, Breathless Riviera Cancun is the place to be.

Secrets Aura Cozumel

If you want to avoid the crowds at Cancun but still be close enough for a quick drive downtown, check out Excellence Playa Mujeres. Guests can look forward to outstanding service, 13 dining options, luxurious rooms, and a wide range of amenities amid perfectly landscaped grounds.

There are seven pools, a rooftop terrace, seven pool bars, and a beautiful beach at the adult-only resort. All-inclusive packages include spa treatments, outdoor activities, and water sports.
