Will There Ever Be a Sandals Resort in Mexico?

While there are currently no Sandals resorts in Mexico, rumors of the company expanding out of the Caribbean and opening a location somewhere in the Riviera Maya region have been circulating for years. CEO Adam Stewart confirmed back in 2016 that the company had plans to break ground on a location near Playa del Carmen, and hinted at possible second locations in Cancun or Cabo San Lucas.

Even more recently CEO Gebhard Rainer said Sandals is early in the process of “exploring possibilities” with developers and local governments in Mexico and the Dominican Republic. He said “They’re two very interesting destinations, but we have to make sure a (potential resort) location is just right before taking action.” He said Sandals looks for the best beaches, but “we don’t want to position ourselves in an area that already has thousands of rooms.”

More recently speaking to Adam Stuart, the executive chairman of Sandals, I got the impression that expansion into Sandals didn’t seem very likely at this time. He said they wanted to go into places where there aren’t similar resorts in the way they have opened the Sandals in Saint Vincent.

If you want to avoid the crowds at Cancun but still be close enough for a quick drive downtown, check out Excellence Playa Mujeres. Guests can look forward to outstanding service, 13 dining options, luxurious rooms, and a wide range of amenities amid perfectly landscaped grounds.
