Traveling to Indonesia for a Honeymoon

Due to its location in Southeast Asia, Indonesia is best accessed by flight. Whilst nowhere in the US currently offers direct flights to Indonesia, there are a number of airlines that have short layovers so you can still get there hassle-free.

Best Destinations in Indonesia for Honeymooners

Indonesia is a gorgeous archipelago, meaning there is plenty of choice when it comes to gorgeous islands to stay on. In fact, Indonesia is actually the largest archipelago in the world, consisting of 5 main islands and many more smaller islands.

That said, when it comes to choosing the perfect destination, you’ll want to pick one of the larger, more inhabited islands, as these are generally more tourist-friendly.

Bali Rice Terraces

Bali

One of the most popular Indonesian islands for visitors is Bali, which offers stunning blue seas, gorgeous beaches, and breathtaking jungles. There are so many wonderful things to discover there too, such as the volcanic mountains, iconic rice paddies, and amazing coral reefs.

Lombok

If you like surfing, Lombok is a great choice. Situated just east of Bali, this gorgeous island is known for its breathtaking beaches and great surfing spots. Lombok is also a great choice if you’re looking to go reef diving or snorkeling.

Java

Another great destination is Java, famous for its many volcanoes, and being home to the nation’s capital city of Jakarta. This is an excellent choice if you’re interested in culture, as you can explore the National Museum, old town, and gorgeous upscale shopping malls and hotels.

Things to do on an Indonesian Honeymoon

What you choose to do on your honeymoon in Indonesia will depend on where you choose to stay. That said, there’s plenty to discover no matter which island you choose to stay on.

Surfing

If you’re interested in watersports and staying in a beachfront resort or hotel, surfing is a great way to spend your days. If you’re staying on the island of Lombok, there are a great number of popular beaches where surfers gather to spend their days catching waves.=

Snorkeling & Scuba Diving

Many coastal areas of Indonesia are home to stunning coral reefs, making them perfect locations to spend time snorkeling and scuba diving. Be sure to enjoy this activity in the mornings though, as this is when the water is most clear, making it the perfect time to be able to see the marine life.

See the Turtles

Indonesia is known for being a home to many Hawksbill turtles, and when scuba diving or snorkeling you may be in with a chance of getting up close and personal with them. If getting in the water isn’t your thing though, there are a number of turtle sanctuaries around the various islands where you can volunteer to lend a helping hand and meet some of these amazing sea creatures.

Go Hiking

Indonesia has many great islands when it comes to landscape. Bali and Java are two that have gorgeous mountains and excellent forests, making them a great place to explore if you’re an avid hiker.

Best Time to Visit Indonesia for a Honeymoon

If you’re planning a honeymoon in Indonesia, the best time to visit is during the dry season, which runs between April and October. During this period, the weather is warm, dry, and perfect for great activities such as relaxing on the beach or snorkeling.

That said,  the dry season in Indonesia is also the peak time for tourism. If you’re looking for a peaceful honeymoon in which you can escape the crowds and enjoy a more private slice of paradise, you may want to consider visiting during the shoulder season. Visiting during March, April, May, October, or November will allow you to enjoy pleasant weather and will typically cost a lot less than visiting during peak season.

It’s important to note that from October through to March, Indonesia experiences a fair amount of rain. So if you’re looking to spend your honeymoon catching a tan on the beach, it may be worth paying a little extra to visit when the weather is at its best, after all, this is a once-in-a-lifetime vacation!

What to Pack for an Indonesian Honeymoon

As Indonesia is a tropical rainforest destination, you’ll want to ensure you’re prepared for the hot and humid weather you will encounter.

Be sure to pack lightweight clothing that is breathable, a swimsuit, and, if you plan on doing some exploring, make sure to bring along a pair of comfortable hiking shoes and a lightweight raincoat.

Many resorts can provide snorkeling gear, so unless you really want to bring your own, you can free up some space in your luggage for souvenirs by leaving it at home.

Overall, Indonesia is one of the most beautiful Southeast Asian destinations for a honeymoon, and well worth the long journey to get there. For a once in a lifetime trip, this stunning country should be at the top of your list.
